As I sit here on the back porch, writing what pretty much amounts to a public diary entry, I’m incredibly grateful for the freedom to be me.
In the not too distant past, our ancestors risked their lives for basic rights that we don’t think twice about today. Only a few generations ago you might be hunted down for speaking your mind. Religion, gender, race – all of the amazing qualities that add variety and diversity to our life experiences were risks for persecution and even bloodshed.
Hell even a week ago I wasn’t allowed to marry who I wanted!
I’m not saying that the U.S. is perfect today. We still see bigotry and intolerance on the news every night. But look at how far we’ve come in such a short time.
I don’t take for granted the progress I’ve seen in a fraction of a lifetime versus the lifetimes it must have felt like to achieve basic human rights in years gone by.
So here’s to freedom in all its forms and variations.
